Sam De Romijn
Sam originally hails from Kwazulu- Natal, after studying a diploma in Public Relations at Varsity College, and a year of Drama at the University of Natal. Sam Graduated from the Waterfront Theatre School in 2001, with her Licentuate Teachers Diploma. She performed in, “It’s not where you start”,” As the Koekie Crumbles” by Fiona Coyne as well as in a number of children’s theatre productions.
She then went on to do a film writing course, and the TEFL course and taught English to foreign language students. She found her feet in the theatre world by stage managing productions for associates, and also professionally at the National Arts Festival for a number of years. Sam worked for Theatre for Africa for two years as Stage Manager, at the Old Zoo venue, where she worked on the productions, “Into the Lion’s Den”, “Limpopo” and “Mama Thembu’s wedding”. Sam has continued to stage manage for smaller productions around Cape Town including working with Mynie Grove on the BBB – Shoprite Checkers campaign. Her journey with Mynie Grove included stage managing the backing choirs for Michale Buble, Josh Groban and other South African local bands.
Sam returned to the Waterfront to head their part- time students tutorials for the Trinity College of London examinations. Her work include selection and preparation of students pieces for all grades.
While working at the Waterfront, Sam met her business partner in the Imbewu trust Paul Griffiths. Together they created the SCrIBE Script Writing Competition as well as produced Neil Coppen’s masterpiece, “Tin Bucket Drum”, in New York. SCrIBE saw some prolific work being brought to production through the trusts financial allocations.
In 2018 the Imbewu Trust won the Innovation in theatre award for the SCrIBE competition.
Sam left the Waterfront Theatre school to pursue a career as an actors agent and as of September last year started her company with partner Nikki Froneman, Arte Viva Management.
Sam lives in Cape Town with her three children, three dogs and husband. She still supports the Sharks. Sam loves to run, yoga and reading great South African literature
